Cyber CEO –
Administrative Privileges
Welcome to our Cyber CEO series, where we break down complex IT and cyber security concepts into simple, easy-to-understand terms. Here, we’re diving into the world of administrative privileges. Understanding and managing these privileges is important for maintaining strong cyber security. Join us as we explore what administrative privileges are, why they matter, and how restricting them can protect your business from cyber threats while boosting productivity and reducing support issues.
What are Administrative Privileges?
Administrative privileges, often called admin rights, grant a user the highest level of control over a computer system. Think of it as being the “God user” – someone who can do almost anything on the computer. This includes installing or deleting software, removing drivers, and changing system settings. In contrast, a standard user has limited access and can only use the programs without making any significant changes.
The Relevance of Administrative Privileges
Past vs. Present
In the past, particularly 10 to 15 years ago, businesses managed administrative rights through servers. Users connected to these servers as standard users, which restricted their ability to install or change software. However, the landscape has shifted significantly. Nowadays, most businesses, even those with up to 100 users, rely on cloud services and hosted platforms. Unfortunately, this shift has led to many users having local administrative rights, allowing them to make significant changes, including potentially harmful ones like executing ransomware.
This change poses a considerable security risk. When users have administrative privileges, they can inadvertently introduce malware or ransomware. Restricting these privileges can dramatically reduce such incidents. In fact, studies show that 9 out of 10 successful cyber attacks are caused by user actions. By removing administrative privileges, most of these attacks, particularly ransomware, can be prevented.
Benefits of Restricting Administrative Privileges
Cyber Security and Administrative Privileges
Restricting administrative privileges is a needed aspect of cyber security. It’s one of the Essential 8 controls recommended by the Australian Cyber Security Centre. Implementing this control can help safeguard your business from various cyber threats.
With our products, we offer solutions that allow businesses to manage administrative privileges effectively, just like in a traditional enterprise environment. Our cloud-based services ensure you can enjoy the same level of security and control as you do with other cloud services like email and file storage.
